Avaxim Junior Hepatitis A vaccine 0.5ml suspension for injection in a pre-filled syringe (POM) is an inactivated vaccine used for the prevention of hepatitis A infection in children aged 1 to 15 years. Hepatitis A is a viral infection that affects the liver, usually caught from food or water containing the virus, with symptoms including jaundice and feeling unwell. After injection, the vaccine prompts the body's natural defences to produce antibodies against hepatitis A, without causing the infection itself.
Usage Instructions
Avaxim Junior is given by a doctor or nurse as an injection into the muscle of the upper arm, or the outer thigh in younger children, and under the skin for those with a bleeding disorder. Protection begins within 2 weeks of the first dose, with a booster usually given between 6 months and 15 years later for long-term protection, in line with official recommendations. Avaxim Junior can also be used as a booster after a different hepatitis A vaccine, and may be given alongside other routine vaccines at separate injection sites.
Side Effects
Very common effects include pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site, along with headache and a general feeling of being unwell, which often resolve without treatment. Common effects include reduced appetite, irritability, difficulty sleeping, stomach pain, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, muscle or joint pain, tiredness, and fever. Rare but serious effects include allergic reactions, fainting, or fits, and urgent medical help should be sought if these occur.
Precautions & Contraindications
Tell the doctor or nurse before vaccination about any allergy to neomycin, a reaction to a previous dose, a bleeding disorder, a weakened immune system, previous jaundice, or fainting after an earlier injection. Vaccination should be delayed if the child currently has a high temperature, and pregnancy should be reported to the doctor, though Avaxim Junior can be given during breastfeeding. Avaxim Junior contains phenylalanine and a small amount of alcohol, and is essentially free from potassium and sodium.
When to Seek Help
Seek emergency care immediately for signs of a serious allergic reaction, including swelling of the face or neck, difficulty breathing, a blue tinge to the lips or tongue, a fast weak pulse, or dizziness leading to fainting. Contact a doctor promptly if fits or seizures occur, particularly alongside fever.
