Amoxicillin 250mg Capsules
Amoxicillin 250mg Capsules (POM) contain amoxicillin trihydrate, a broad-spectrum penicillin antibiotic. Amoxicillin Capsules are used to treat bacterial infections affecting the sinuses, throat, chest, ears, and urinary tract, and are also used alongside other medicines to treat stomach ulcers linked to Helicobacter pylori. Amoxicillin works by weakening the bacterial cell wall, causing the bacteria to die.
Usage Instructions
Amoxicillin Capsules are swallowed whole with water, without opening the capsule, and may be taken with or without food. The usual adult dose is 250mg Amoxicillin Capsules taken three times a day, spaced evenly at least 4 hours apart, though this may increase to 500mg or higher for more severe infections. In children weighing under 40kg, dosing is calculated by body weight and advised by a doctor. The full course should always be completed, even if symptoms improve, to reduce the risk of the infection returning.
Side Effects
Common effects include diarrhoea, nausea, and skin rash, which often resolve without stopping treatment. Uncommon effects include vomiting. Serious effects include severe allergic reactions, severe skin reactions, and inflammation of the bowel with blood in the stools. Stop use and seek urgent help if any of these occur.
Precautions & Contraindications
Amoxicillin should not be used by anyone with a known allergy to penicillins, cephalosporins, or other beta-lactam antibiotics. Before use, tell the doctor about kidney problems, reduced urine output, or a history of glandular fever, as amoxicillin is not recommended if infectious mononucleosis is suspected. Amoxicillin Capsules are not for viral infections, and may affect the results of blood, urine, and pregnancy-related oestriol tests. Other medicines to disclose include allopurinol, probenecid, warfarin, and methotrexate.
When to Seek Help
Seek emergency medical help for signs of a serious allergic reaction, including swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, breathing difficulties, or a severe rash. Contact a doctor urgently for severe diarrhoea with bleeding, dark urine, pale stools, or yellowing of the skin or eyes.
